This has 11 been well-publicized in some corners of the internet, but I suspect that not 12 enough folks know that their computers will soon become security hazards (as 13 newly discovered exploits fail to get patched), and upgrading them to Windows 14 11 won't be possible due to hardware limitations. 15 16 These are perfectly good computers destined to either become unsafe for their 17 owners or toxic e-waste. The [End of 10](https://endof10.org/) campaign aims to 18 help these folks upgrade their computers to free and safe (but unfamiliar) 19 operating systems, but people are going to need help. 20 21 I'd be starting late, but I'm interested in supporting any neighbors who are 22 interested in making the switch. In addition to Microsoft's looming deadline, a 23 few other things have come across my feed in the past couple months that are 24 inspiring me: 25 26 - [You should start a computer club in the place that you 27 live](https://startacomputer.club/) is a galvanizing manifesto that got these 28 ideas rolling for me. 29 30 - [Minimum viable organizations](https://kim.town/minimum-viable-organisation) 31 is about lefty political organizations specifically, but some of the thoughts 32 here are relevant to my experience with other sorts of volunteer organizations. 33 I don't agree with everything written here (I don't think it's possible, as 34 some statements seem self-contradictory), but I like a lot of it. 35 36 - The authors of [How to Start a School With Your 37 Friends](https://prigoose.substack.com/p/how-to-start-a-university) provide a 38 template for peer-based learning embedded in community contexts. As much as I'd 39 love to help my neighbors become comfortable with computers, I would love even 40 more to learn new things from them! 41 42 These are all just the disorganized thoughts of one person. I'm planning to 43 contact my neighborhood library branch next to see if they would host a 44 computer club, or connect me with similar efforts nearby. I also plan to chat 45 about this with organizers and volunteers the next time I help at a FixIt 46 Clinic. This probably won't go anywhere but it's worth trying.
